LET'S WRAP IT UP!!!!

Today we needed to cover up the 7th floor with plastic. It took us pretty much all day to cover up the 7th floor and to take the rest of the equipment back to school. By the time we moved the scaffolding to the last bay, we were seriously professionals at taking it apart and piecing it back together. Luke was pretty much the pioneer for taping the plastic to mural (because he was mainly the only one who could reach the area! haha) It was quite a productive day, and what a way to finish! We'll see you next year mural! Also, check out some video of Dan's visiting parents! As Abby would say, cheers!

Yesterday we pulled paints and lights- today we pulled more paints and ladders. Today might have been the last time I ever leave the building before construction is completed. Tomorrow will be our last day working, but since I can't make it, I've asked Lance or Luke to take a few photos for me again. Tomorrow will consist of final touch-ups on the last box (which Lance and I helped with earlier today) and plastic-wrapping the entire seventh floor (which requires moving the scaffolding from box to box). I took three photos today. All of them while I was leaving, one was too black to make out, the other was blurry. A poetic way to end this adventure since the whole thing practically moved too fast to record with any degree of accuracy or justice. Cheers.

Well my friends the time has come. Three colors on one bay left to paint. The crew and I have been working on wiping down walls and sealing them up with plastic still. Tomorrow will be the same. Luke is the one up in the final box and it's looking good. We're so close to being done. We even started pulling supplies from the building today. All of our paints and most of our lights have been packed up and sent away. It's going to be strange not being in the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts on a regular basis anymore after this week. We may not be back until the opening reception- and by then everything will be completed and the growth and constant change will slow to a halt. It's been fun.

I gave Blake control of my camera for a little while and the boy went nuts. I had to upload 130 photos to my computer earlier. One very good thing came form this though- He took some beautiful shots that really made me take a new look around the building and realize how gorgeous it really is all over again. For that, I thank him.

They had almost all of the scaffolding down in the center of the room by the time I left today.

My parents came in for a tour, which was great.

We are wrapping the boxes in plastic after we wipe them down, in order to keep them as dust free as possible.

Hello!

More of the dance floor is down. We could see floor to ceiling on both sides of the stage today. It was incredible. Of course, you can't take a very good picture just yet since most of the scaffolding is still in place, but boy is it cool to see in person.

Dan made the executive decision today that we will not be putting a sealant on the boxes. Sealants have a few risks (such as becoming cloudy over dark spaces, coloring over time, and trapping unwanted moisture) that outweigh the benefits at this point in the mural's life. That being said- We are literally days away from completion. Under Dan's estimation, we will be done this coming Wednesday at the earliest and a tentative Thursday at the latest. LESS THAN ONE WEEK!

The Doom Box was finished today, not a touch up left to be found.... except for that one little corner that I have been instructed to forget about hahaha. Micah and I did our happy dances- see our excited faces?

Jobs are super hard to come by. I'm going to work with Micah again tomorrow- softly scrubbing boxes until they're dust-free. Next week, people involved with the process book will probably not be working in the auditorium, but rather, we will meet and further our progress with the Process Book we've been minimally neglecting lately. I'll take pictures when the whole thing is done, and hopefully we'll be allowed in later to see it once all the scaffolding is completely down from the center of the room.

On the Job: Day 42, 8-11

Wow, lots going on today. Finding something to work on is almost becoming hard to do we are so close to being done. Micah and I did a happy dance today when we peeled almost the last bit of tape away from our final shape in the Doom Box. We need to touch up one more shape and the entire box will be finalized and peeling-free! Hopefully I didn't just jinx it. I brought cookies in to celebrate.

The construction boys are working on removing the dance floor (the temporary floor they had held up by scaffolding that ran parallel with the 7th floor), so we were able to get our first glimpse of all four floors worth of boxes on one side of the stage. That's so unbelievably exciting!

We were featured on NBC Action News this week. They interviewed our very own Andrea "Mo" Morris, and they used a picture from our blog that I took on day 21 which was super cool to see. They even mentioned the blog, though the link they gave takes you through the school's site and you have to filter through all the other silly blogs that our school has/facilitates. Wish they gave this link since I didn't even really know that the school was posting my posts in their blog... Meh.

Another day at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. Still working on touch ups. Micah and I are... well... still working in the Doom Box. I think the restart number in that box is at the minimum 5 at this point. So far so good, except for the spot that peeled... *twitch* but we fixed it...? Grr.

There was a water main that broke. We couldn't clean our brushes out today, no big deal, but it could suck if it's not fixed tomorrow.

I took lots of video today. I don't know when I'll get it up. I'll keep you posted. Ha, pun... posting on a blog.

Started in "the box" again today. No peeling. Keep your fingers crossed. I mixed a new color today for it since we were running low on the original color. I dubbed it "A Muddy Reincarnation." It works. I asked Micah to bring me my camera and instead of going to get it, he drew it (See picture below). Uh.... I reckon that's all.

Didn't take many pictures today. Dan wasn't around so we didn't really do all that much. We got some minor house cleaning done- taped off some shapes, worked on some touch ups.... Child's play really. Dan is taking the day off tomorrow too, and I think we all decided like that sounded nice.

I started working in the box again. How many times have we heard that now? How about "it started peeling again.?" Well...... The dang box starting frickin' peeling again. I took up most of the dark green again and will have to finish scraping and GAC it AGAIN tomorrow. Grumble sigh complain. On a positive note, Jake was drinking a juice box today which totally made my day better.

Seven looks more and more complete every time I venture up there. The glass on the outside is still coming along really nicely.

We're not meeting for the process book this week. Too many people doing too many things.

The dance floor was looking pretty empty today. I guess they're really trying hard to start bringing scaffolding down soon. The place is going to look naked, empty, and HUGE once it all comes down I think. It'll be weird never seeing it around again, or hanging stuff off of it.... weird. I guess I should enjoy it while it's still around.

We are officially on touch-up mode. Most of our crew has been spending a lot of time on floors five and six working on final touch ups in those boxes. If I had to make a prediction, I'd say we will be done by the start of school (Sept. 23) easily. That being said, that prediction will only come true if the darn boxes stop peeling. Micah and I should be working in our box again- keep your fingers crossed for us that this is the last time we have to finalize it. I was working on a box today where I taped off sections to be repainted and left myself little notes as to how I wanted to paint it- such as the "By (insert poorly drawn hand here)" notes.

Pretty uneventful day. Got a second coat of the huge blue chunk up on seven that I had started yesterday. Micah and I are touching up our box again (the one with the hole after hole after hole) and that seems to be chugging along still.... Uh..... That's all really. I took tomorrow off to go home and celebrate my mom's birthday in St. Louis so I won't be documenting day 35 tomorrow, but I asked Lance to take some photos though so the day still gets documented. Our NPR story aired this morning- did anyone catch it? I'll post the link tomorrow when I find it. I think it's exciting that after our first radio interview aired we got our first votes for "read about the blog or heard about it on the net." Blog Business Cards

So............. I was feeling a bit creatively starved today..... and bored.... and I... Well..... I made a business card for the blog. Might sound a bit crazy, but this way I can hand them out to my friends or family members that as me about the blog and they can have something to remember it by. I know, I'm crazy. I'm okay with that. Don't be jealous, if you're nice I might give you a few. :D

Condensed Universe, same color scheme as the original blog banner (Designed by Micah Barta for those of you that have forgotten). I printed them on a heavy stock paper but they're not as stiff as card stock. Didn't think I should go OVERboard with what they're printed on since most people would pitch them anyway.... though I did consider laminating them... hmmm. The image that has the glare is more accurate color-wise, the others look pretty dark.

NPR show didn't happen this morning. We got bumped again to either tomorrow (Wednesday) or the day after (Thursday), same time, same place, different day.

Micah and I finished our box today! As we were peeling off the LAST piece of tape however.... one tiny little spot started to bubble. I called Dan over and by the time he was through, half of our wall had peeled off. There is so much compound on the walls (which was used to smooth out the plaster) that the paint just peeled right off, almost in a solid sheet. It made me wince to watch. So now, instead of the box being finished today, we'll be lucky to have it done by Friday. It was sad.

Process book meeting #4, 7-26

So, we all met at Barnes and Noble for our Process Book Meeting last night. We looked through books and magazines to find inspiration for our layouts, color schemes, and possibly type face choices (though we seemed to have settled that matter already. Mo did well). I am working on color schemes and though I like the bold colors of the first image and the fox image below, the woman in sepia tones kind of spoke to me. The idea of having a set of muted colors with one pop of color seems pretty logical considering how saturated most of our photos will be (there are a TRUCK LOAD of colors in this mural). It was a good meeting, we have a lot to think about now.

The rest of us were not as bored as Lance.

The peeling paint issue that had arisen in the box Micah and I have still been working on seems to have been averted for the time being (knock-on-wood for you suspicious types). We are hoping to finish the box up tomorrow which may or may not happen, it will be a close call. I managed to make it to floor 8 today to take pictures of the glass (photos below of course), as well as a few other random things.

Tomorrow (being Tuesday) morning you should tune into NPR (89.3 for those of you in KC) and check out the story they interviewed us for. They're playing the story at 5:30a, 730a, and 930a. Wednesday the story will be up on their website KCUR.org (in the archives). I'll post a tangible link Wednesday when I find it.

Sheesh- I used a lot of parentheses today. (Hoo. Yeah. What are they good for? Absolutely nothing. (Not true, but you get my point)). Uhm..... guess that's really all I know for today.

No no, just kidding. We actually got some very important decisions made tonight which will really help us get cracking on this book. We assigned some jobs and discussed important specifications for the jobs. We're excited. Still. Again. Always.

Uhm. Er. What?

Micah and I painted a lot today. I washed my brush out at least ten times, which is a new personal record.

Don't know if any of you knew this or not, but we have no running water inside of the building. We have three buckets that we fill with water every day that we use to wash our brushes in. Then, at the end of the day, we have to go dump the buckets, rinse them out, and finish washing the brushes outside with a hose in a pile of sand. We call it "going to the beach." It's hot like a beach, but generally noisier and smells pretty bad since it skirts the port-a-potties.

We are NOT working tomorrow, so day 31 will be on Monday and you probably won't get a post from me tomorrow. Note: I did say "probably."

We're having the third process book meeting tonight instead of tomorrow since we're not painting tomorrow. Guess I'll post those pics later too haha. Wow, I'm a blog-aholic. Oh well. By the way, we just hit 20 followers! Woo!

I don't know how I keep going through days taking only one picture. There is always so much going on and I feel like I'm missing a lot of it! Anyway... We patched our blue spot today, but it peeled right back up. Issue Station indeed. We have one box up on the top floor that's finalized. And as of yesterday there was glass going up on the outside of the building! There will eventually be a HUGE glass wall on the back shell of the Kauffman Center and it's starting to go up. That's incredibly exciting for me. I didn't think we'd still be working there by the time it started going up! I promise to take more pictures tomorrow. Cheers.

Micah and I started in our new box today. We got some "It's a Boy! Blue" and "this is what key lime pie should look like" on the walls. As I was taking the tape down around the it's a boy, we had some major peeling issues yet again. Dan came and did some patch work, it's going to be a slow recovery for that spot. Hopefully that's our only rough spot on that wall though. Really, really- hopefully lol. I realized just wrote an entire narrative about our box and then had a random picture of Luke thrown into the mix down at the bottom there haha.... Oh well. While driving to the Kauffman Center this morning I was behind a guy in a pickup truck. Most men that have pickups can be spotted transporting a dog in the bed. This guy had two geese. Don't know what was up with that really. Made my day a bit happy.

Today was rather eventful. While I was putting some final touches on The Thirteen and a Half Lives of Captain Blueberry, I was getting up close and personal and a bug crawled out of the wall right in front of my face. I yelped and Micah had to kill it for me. Gross. THEN we had a guy from the KC Star come interview us, which was sweet. I'll post the link to the article as soon as he sends it to me. I finished the box I've been working in and started on the smallest box on that side of the stage on the bottom floor. I tapped of a shape that should be painted by the end of tomorrow. All good stuff. We'll be having our third process book meeting tonight... I'll post picture if I take any... Uhm... what else... Nothing I guess! Talk to you tomorrow :)

I thought I took far more photos than I did today... I only took one picture haha. The box that Micah and I have been working in should, if everything goes as planned, be done on Monday which is pretty exciting. We got a second coat of Weak Sauce down and got a first coat of Thirteen and a Half Lives of Captain Blueberry down along the bottom. The second coat of the blue and some minor touchups along the tape lines should allow us to call it quits!

Lance interviewed me today (video is now below). Lance and I also decided it would be fun to start interviewing some of the Kuaffman Center constructions workers and we'd like to start showcasing an interview with one of them once a week. Our Construction Worker of the Week (CWotW) this week is a carpenter named Jake. He's a real cool guy and you'll like his interview! BTW- Lance took the video footage today, which is why the video is shaped the wait it is. -rolls eyes- Way to go Lance. Haha!

Day 25. Took some more video today- an interview with Todd and Blake and a bit of tomfoolery. We got the second coat of Nuclear Winter on the walls, as well as a bit of Grimace Fur purple and the Huge teal stripe that Lance has named Weak Sauce. Sweet.

Okay, enough of that, on to the good stuff. Uhm........... we're still painting. Ha. No really, we still are. Micah helped me out in my bay today. We got Sick Casper (green) done yesterday and we painted with a very pale green-yellow-white today that Micah dubbed "Nuclear Winter" which I found pretty and appropriate. Didn't take many photos today, but I took a bit of video of Micah talking about the day.

Finished my Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and Cat Tongue Pink sections today... If that green hasn't been named I think I'd like to call it Sick Casper, it was kind of a ghostly green. Going to be working with a white tomorrow, which is a HUGE part of that bay so that should be cool. It is official that we have paint on all floors on both sides, though not in all boxes but I'm sure that will come soon enough. I'm listening to a bit of David Bowie right now. Don't know why that's important to mention, but it happens. We're still working on fixing one of the bays that had been having MAJOR chipping issues with the paint/gesso, but we're hoping to have solved the issue. I found out we have a Pinkey and the Brain pink today, which excited me and got a certain theme song stuck in my head. Overall it wasn't a horrible Tuesday.

On the Job: Day 22, 7-12

Gonna be kind of a selfish post today, but I have no idea what anyone else worked on and I didn't have the time to take pictures of anyone else/ anyone else's work... so... yeah. But! I put paint down in the bottom floor on the right side of the stage, which means we have paint on all of the floors now I do believe. Wait.... maybe not. I'll have to double check tomorrow, but there is paint on all floors on the right of the stage, that much I know for sure. I like working in this box. The bottom floors are much cooler than the top floors. There's gotta be at least a 10 degree difference between bottom and top floor. This box is also cool because those two little arrow-like things are something that appear in my own sketches every now and then, so it was fun incorporating them into the mural. I got to name the two pinks I spent today (and will spend tomorrow) with. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is the darker/punchy pink that you see in the pics below. The second coat of paint that will go on the arrows is a lighter shade that I dubbed Cat Tongue Pink. The scaffolding freaks me out. I don't know what it is about heights... I do not fear really tall heights, but if you put me on a two-step step stool I get dizzy and start to shake. The scaffolding would probably make me sick haha.

We started working on the process book again tonight, which is good considering how much we still need to do with it. For those of you interested in helping out, we're going to meet Monday and Friday nights from 7-8 at different restaurants so people can get food. We doled out some assignments and such... the ball is moving.

We finally got some scaffolding so we were able to work higher on the tall boxes on the top floor. We also started sketching out on the bottom floor on the right of the stage. All floors are getting attention now. 12/24 boxes are done. I fell and twisted my knee today. That's what... hard hats... are for....? Sure. Anyway, after work we all went to get lunch, which was fun.

Woah... I can't believe we've only been at this for twenty days! We've gotten so much done it's incredible. We got paint on two of the top floor walls on the right side of the stage today which is amazing (I say that a lot and I'm sorry, but it really does just blow my mind!). I think we're going to get some scaffolding tomorrow after all which will help tremendously. The last image down below is of a cup of burnt umber, aka Anita Blake Black, which I named after one of my favorite book characters. Woo.

Got to work up on the top floor today- that was exciting. I think it was 15 feet from floor to ceiling in the box Micah and I worked on today. It seems like the last few days have moved verrrry slowly, but we officially have someone working on the top floor which is pretty super-duper! Managed to take some pretty cool photos today after working on the same red-to-blue line ALL day. Curves are my number one enemy right now, but I'm sure Micah and I will beat that line into submission first thing tomorrow!

On the Job: Day Fifteen, 6-30

Big day for us out at the Kauffman Center today. We have eight boxes of twenty-four done today. You would think that sounds like we're a third of the way done, but the large boxes upstairs are about double the size, that being said we're about a fourth of the way there. Moshe Safdie came to visit us today, which was a real treat. Tom Ryan from Present Magazine also stopped by. I'm still working on uploading the final third of the video footage I took on day nine so keep checking that post! Cheers.

Monday, Monday. We seemed to be watching a lot of paint dry today so it went a bit slower, but we should have a few more boxes knocked out bright and early tomorrow morning. Remember the walls we had to scrape clean of primer? Well we started drawing on them again today. Swell. My day was filled with Young Grandma (pink) and Fantasia Elephant (another pink) mixed in with some Great Gatsby Green.

Thank Batman It's Friday. We got a LOT done this week which is pretty amazing. The box that Luke and Lance and I have been working on should be done on Wednesday at the latest and the other two boxes on that floor shouldn't be too far behind. We did some painting with "Silver Lining for the Performing Arts" and "Humpback Acrobat" today. Good times all around I do say.

On the Job: Day Eleven, 6-24

Day Eleven... Well... we were so productive today that I only took three pictures. That should tell you somethin' for sure. We have moved to the left side of the stage and things are definitely still chugging along. We have started naming some of our colors that end up on the walls. We have a pink named after Mark Salmon and an amazing blue that has been dubbed "Super Smurf Blue" which is appropriate considering how small of a space it covered. Luke had the brilliant idea that we should add in all of the paint colors and their names to our process book. I can't wait!

Day Ten was a Wednesday. As of this day we have two boxes "finalized." By finalized I mean that all the paint is on the walls with just minor, minor touch ups left. It is estimated that by Friday we will have 9 boxes completed. We shall see!

It seems like the insects are attracted to our painting. Must be the bright colors. We had a HUGE moth in one box and a rather big mosquito in another. We are in the process of final touches on one box, which is exciting to us all. (I'll post pictures in a few hours, this computer is being silly.)

It's crazy how slowly things seem to be coming, but when I stand on the third level down on the left side of the stage and look across, the middle two floors almost look complete. It's rather mind-blowing. We almost have one box completely painted, but it still needs a few minor touchups before we call it "finished." Still mighty exciting!

We got a lot of painting done today. Yesterday we were able to start on a second floor so that's good. The kids are still working hard at scraping away the base coat in two of the boxes.

Remember the box where our tape was peeling up the primer layer? Well it was decided that we needed to completely scrape down that entire layer so we could repaint it. Besides that it was a pretty straight forward day of painting.

It's only the end of the third day on site and we've already got some paint on the walls! It's incredible how fast it's moving, but there was a small glitch when our tape started peeling up the primer layer off the plaster in one box on our current floor. We're not sure what's going to happen there just yet but keep your fingers crossed that it's an easy fix!

The second day of our on-site work was a smashing success by almost any standards. We got all but one or two of the boxes on an entire floor measured and sketched out, ready for paint. I think we're all getting progressively more excited as time passes and more of our hard work goes into effect.

Today, the tenth of June, 2010, was the first day the Kauffman kids were allowed to get some actual work done on site. We opened our eyes bright and early and arrive on site at a whopping seven am for the safety instructions, followed by a drug test (which we all thankfully passed), followed by initial measuring in a few of the blocks. Tomorrow is due to be another day of measuring with intentions to begin laying paint down sometime Monday. Below are some of the images of our first actual day working on the site. Enjoy, and check back often, as I'm sure more and more images will be streaming in as the mural progresses.

Just reminding the design students to start working on the essays they agreed to do. We need rough drafts of those by Monday.

Everyone needs to still be getting images to Bryan or myself. If you're giving them to me you can put them on my cas (agallagher) but if you do that you need to email me (blondesrsnart@sbcglobal.net). If you have hard copies to give to Bryan you can put them on his desk in the design building or email him to make other arrangements.

We need your personal bios (clean rough draft at LEAST) by this coming Wednesday (the 28th).
We need your ideology for your pieces/process (at LEAST another clean rough draft) by Monday (May 3rd).

Micah and I are going to create the PDF to send of the final two designs tonight. I guess most of the design kids are going to go take photos of those pieces tonight at 6.

To anyone wanting to paint on the small models Theresa and I made, I left them in the drawing ro

om where we normally have class. If you want to work out a system like Molly and Blake where you take turns, photograph the work and move on, that could be a great way of working since there are only two models there right now. Also, gesso the back of the boards as well as the front to prevent warping.

First Proposals

Direction 1

considered: sense of mystery or drama/theatre, painterly with interruption of geometric shapes, radial spiral orientation, intuitive immediate, “fresh”, rich visual texture.

connotations main: dramatic, intuitive, immediate, mysterious, slow read.

connotations sub: create depth, break up large areas of color.

Direction 2

considered: in its most simplest form the idea conveys the influence and interaction of the motion of sound with the city. The concept of this piece revolves around the forms taking place in the architecture and how they interact with the geometric forms, which relate to the Crossroads district, downtown, and midtown. The piece works to embrace the audience and plays to the symmetrical aspect of the architecture.

connotation main: curvilinear, rhythm, geometric, dancing/music/sound and it’s relationship to shapes, lines based off of Moshe’s concept drawing, influences and interacts.

connotation sub: reference to a city in constant change, transition from midtown to downtown and changes in the architectural forms, each wall section treated as individual composition while still contributing to the whole, creating flow with geometry and transparency.

Direction 3

considered: a sense of merging relating to midtown and downtown, a sense of depth and layering from the transparency, free form and organic flow through the shapes of color, a reference to Kansas City's greenery

connotations: convergence, transparency, saturated color, merging, natural.

Direction 4

considered: instrument strings, overlapping, intersecting, throws attention to the stage, transition to stage, always changes as the audience moves, the colors and lines do too, the stage completes the composition (opens to the stage), mid west landscape, expansion of midtown & downtown.

connotations: connectivity, transition, fluidity, vitality.

Direction 5

considered: the overall concept of these two pieces is the idea of organic line supporting the structure and contrasting visually with the slats.
The lines will enhance the idea of forms flowing through each theater box gently intertwining with the slats to create the effect of movement.
The movement created will comment on the idea or illusion of theatrical souls moving within the drapery of the forms.

connotations main: theatrical sensation, organic, mosaic background, integrated to give intrinsic flavor.
connotations sub: fluidity, lyrical, organic, movement, theatrical, drama.

Direction 6

considered: organic geometry, fractals, dramatic energy motion, repetitive lines create vibration with slats, fluid lyrical lines.

connotations: geometric, repetition, fluid, energetic, harmonious, radial.

Hey kids. I thought it would be fun to open the floor to see if anyone wanted to make a banner for our blog here. Several of you showed interest so I figured anyone that wants to can submit a design and I'll pick my favorite to throw up on the site.
